this is a (r A N d O M) entry.
with the usual teaspoonful of sugar and vinegar. :)
i feel very unlucky today.
especially during my Organic Chemistry laboratory practical.
i screwed up my whole experiment.
yet i have not a single clue what went wrong! x_x
(even the teaching assistants were scratching their heads in amusement)
our crude compound (prepared two weeks before) was in yellow powdery form.
we were supposed to dissolve our crude compound in hot ethanol. and recrystallise it out to remove any impurities.
everyone was getting a clear yellow/orange solution. when they warmed and dissolved their crude compound in ethanol.
i was getting some murky dirty dark orange-brown liquid (not even a clear solution) instead.
my solid simply refused to recrystallise.
i was devastated.
i thought all my efforts were down the drain.
i thought my final product sure gone case.
and my laboratory report for this experiment sure going to be a straight fail.
(laboratory reports are counted towards our final grade somemore :Z)
but at last! i obtained a solid.
apparently i 高兴得太早 already.
it was nowhere near its original yellow powdery state! o.O
it was some brown and sticky (i-also-don't-know-what) solid instead.
that was when all the teaching assistants gathered around to see and discuss about the amazing weird farnee solid i obtained. -_-"
that was when i discovered my supposed "filtrate" that passed through the filter papers and funnel was collecting clumps of powdery solid.
out of desperation (i didn't want to fail my laboratory report); i asked my teaching assistant whether i can try filtering my "filtrate" again. since there were lumps of solid in it.
maybe my yellow solid was actually hiding in the "filtrate" (goodness who knows why).
and yes.
that was how i finally managed to obtain something yellow (more presentable with my laboratory report anyways).
(notice that murky orange liquid in the flask; that was my second round filtrate; it was acting like some sort of dye; dying my yellow solid orange in colour :X)
my yellow final product.(my teaching assistant remarked, "at least it is yellow.")
my two TCL plates (one before recrystallisation; one after recrystallisation).(this is to check for the purity of our final product)
after three hours of sheer hard work + worries. x_x
